Subject Description

Through the study of Psychology, students will focus on evidence-based procedures including observation, experimentation, and experience, to allow them to develop useful skills in analytical and critical thinking and in making inferences. Students will learn how to be critical consumers of information, how to identify psychological processes at work in everyday experiences, how to apply knowledge to real-world situations, how to investigate psychological issues, and how to be an effective communicator.

Content

A selection of four of the topics listed below per year (2 per semester).

  • Lifespan: how our thoughts, feelings and behaviours change throughout our lives
  • Emotion & wellbeing: explore the three components of emotion to better understand feelings and behaviour, alongside examining wellbeing through mindfulness techniques and strategies for supporting others
  • Forensic psychology: study of thoughts, intentions and emotions that contribute to criminal behaviour and understanding the legal system and eyewitness testimony.
  • Cognitive psychology: how mental functions like attention, thinking, and language interact to help us make sense of the world (strong focus on memory and processes involved in memory).
  • Neuropsychology: how the brain and nervous system influence perception, cognition, emotion, and behaviour, including the roles of neurons, brain structures, hormones, and neurotransmitters.

Pathways

To be successful in Stage 2 Psychology, students are recommended to have achieved:

  • A minimum of a B- grade overall, and
  • At least a C grade in the examination

in one or more semesters of Stage 1 Psychology, or another Year 11 science subject (excluding Scientific Studies ).
