Subject Description

Chemistry develops students’ understanding of key chemical concepts, such as atomic structure, bonding and chemical change. Students apply science inquiry skills to investigate physical properties of materials including polymers and organic compounds.

Students design and conduct qualitative and quantitative investigations both individually and collaboratively. Students investigate aspects that focus on the social, ethical, or environmental impact of Chemistry.

Content

Semester 1:

  • Materials and their atoms: atomic structure, chemical bonding, the periodic table and nanotechnology
  • Combining atoms: chemical bonding (ionic, covalent, metallic), properties and shapes
  • Molecules: organic chemistry (hydrocarbons, polymers, and naming conventions)

Semester 2:

  • Stoichiometry: analytical calculations involving concentrations and density, and titration techniques
  • Acids and bases: properties, strengths, and reactions of acids and bases
  • Redox reactions: redox reactions, including metal reactivity, half-equations and electrochemical cells
Assessment
  • Assessment Type 1: Investigations Folio
  • Assessment Type 2: Skills and Application Tasks
  • Assessment Type 3: Examination
Pathways

To be successful in Stage 2 Chemistry, students are recommended to have achieved:

  • A minimum of a B- grade overall, and
  • At least a C grade in the examination

In one or more semesters of Stage 1 Chemistry or Physics.
