Subject Description

Biology is the study of the diversity of life. This course investigates biological systems and their interactions, from cellular processes to ecosystem dynamics.

Students design and conduct biological investigations and gather evidence from their investigations. As they explore a range of biology related issues, students recognise that biological knowledge is constantly changing through the application of new ideas and technologies.

Content

Semester 1:

  • Cells and microorganisms: cell structure & function, and key processes such as photosynthesis and respiration
  • Infectious diseases: pathogens, how they spread & how the immune system responds

Semester 2:

  • Multicellular organisms: how cells, tissues, organs and systems work together
  • Biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics: classification, interactions between biotic and abiotic factors, flow of energy in ecosystems, biodiversity and species relationships
Assessment
  • Assessment Type 1: Investigations Folio
  • Assessment Type 2: Skills and Application Tasks
  • Assessment Type 3: Examination
Pathways

To be successful in Stage 2 Biology, students are recommended to have achieved:

  • A minimum of a B- grade overall, and
  • At least a C grade in the examination In one or more semesters of Stage 1 Biology or another Year 11 science subject (excluding Scientific Studies).
